Social Aspect

The 1920s was when the first ideas of weekends came around. Weekends were actually started by Henry Ford, the main manufacturer of cars in the 1920s. He said wanted his workers to buy his cars and be able to enjoy what they spent their time making all day, but it was really just for the money. He decided to give his workers two days off at the end of every week so that his workers would have the time to use their cars.

This idea of weekends turned out to be a revolutionary idea as it gave people more time to do whatever they wanted. Many more people had the time to watch sports now. Most people were within a few hours of a drive to different baseball stadiums thanks to their cars so they could go enjoy games on the weekends.

As America’s entertainment grew with sports, new technologies made it easier for people to keep up with sports all around the nation. People could listen to sports games live on the radio, which was invented in 1866, but didn’t become popular until the early 1900s. Newspapers would post scores and some stories about different sporting events, which was the most popular way of keeping up with sports.

Athletes in the 1920s were the only people Americans had to “idolize”, or follow, besides Political Leaders. Babe Ruth became the biggest role model in America for people all around the nation. Kids and adults loved him and followed all of his games. This is one of the reasons sports became so popular because people started idolizing these big athletes and would strive to be as good as they are in the sport they play.
